taversity.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=143&proposalid=12448\nThis discussion p
roposes to change the makeup of a data governance group from project m
anagers to individuals with data analysis capabilities and subject matter e
xpertise – individuals that can answer questions about the data.&nbsp
;Most data governance groups are heavy on project managers. This was a typi
cal implementation as the group's activities is heavily based on d
ealing with adoption and changes to organizations and processes. Howev
er, there is less convincing necessary today as Data Governance is not an o
ption. With non-optionality, the objectives and goals of data governance&nb
sp;should adjust and that means re-thinking the approach.\nA HelpDesk
is focused on helping and a HelpDesk does not mandate nor control. As
such, data governance should be more focused on helping. Data consumer
s need a place to answer and address any data issues. Addressing these need
s in a consistent way promotes quality and consistency in usage of data.&nb
sp;Trust the business to know what to ask. Pattern the resolutions to turn
inquiries into governance in action. Ultimately, the goal of any suppo
rt organization should be on helping run and grow the business, not limitin
g and mandating potentially non-value added activities.\nThe following is r
ecommended to set up a Data Governance HelpDesk: \n\n
Acquire Access to Data: This includes a Book of Record systems, interf
aces, reporting, staging, and data consumption repositories. Unless you can
query the data, there is no point in talking about definitions or req
uirements. This means that you will need more analysts on the team and budg
et to implementing reporting platforms to help address the questions.\n
Keep an eye on Lineage: Unless you know where the data is, where it is comi
ng from, where it is going, and how it is consumed, there is no point
in talking about an issue. Ask the right questions to contextualize the iss
ue. A HelpDesk model can help train the analysts or SMEs to address the iss
ues in a consistent way.\n
Allow for Contextual Definitions: As we all know, there is no single defini
tion that can be used by all lines of business and functional groups. We ha
ve great advances in text mining capabilities today. We are not limited to
creating just one definition for a concept. Technology allows us to handle
many for similar ideas. Build a model to pattern search definitions.\n\n
